What You’ll Gain from This Training

  • Confidence & Skills: You’ll build the skills and confidence to support adolescents and young adults who self-harm.
  • A Deeper Understanding of Self-Harm: You’ll learn more about distress in adolescents and young people and how self-harm can present and how to approach this topic in conversation.
  • Positive Conversations: We’ll build on how to engage in conversations around risk and vulnerability in a positive and empowering way.
  • Practical Skills: You’ll extend your knowledge and skills to confidently identify, assess, and support individuals at risk of self-harm and/or suicide.

STORM Skills Training® Skill Sets Include:

  • Skill Set 1: Connecting and understanding
  • Skill Set 2: Assessment of vulnerability to suicide and self-harm
  • Skill Set 3: Working towards sharing information
  • Skill Set 4: Supporting the support network
  • Skill Set 5: Safety planning

This program is grounded in current best practices for working with young people (ages 12-24) who are at risk of self harm and/or suicide. It’s based on adult education theories and evidence showing participants who engage fully (including filmed skills practice) see improvements in skills, confidence, and attitudes around suicide prevention.

Skills practice is a key part of this training, and you will take part in filmed practice to help reinforce the learning. Research shows this type of practice helps embed the knowledge long-term.
