A teenage girl discovers she can jump back in time in Mamoru Hosoda's award-winning anime feature.
After a mysterious incident in the school laboratory, teenager Makoto discovers a new talent. With a run-up and a leap, she can jump back in time. At first, she uses her new power to navigate teenage dramas – embarrassment at school, and dodging the growing affections of her friend Chiaki – but soon she realises much more might be at stake.
Curator's note
Directed by Mamoru Hosoda (Summer Wars), The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a call for compassion disguised as a science fiction adventure. The film focuses on the texture of teenage life: how our small dramas matter to us, but also how easily we overlook the way they ripple out to the people around us.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time competed at the prestigious Annecy International Animated Film Festival, where it received a special distinction. The film touches on themes of bullying and contains mild sexual references. Recommended for audiences 12+.
This is one of the most thoughtfully engaging anime features to reach these shores
